History
ASHIC Foundation is a beacon of hope that arose from
tremendous tragedy for the Choudhury family.
The organization was founded in 1994 after the Choudhurys lost their son,
Ashiq, to a rare form of cancer when he was only three years old.
After his untimely demise, the family wanted to do something meaningful
in the field of childhood cancer and hence the beginning of ASHIC, A Shelter for
Helpless Ill Children.
During Ashiq’s yearlong treatment at the Great Ormond
Street Hospital in London, his mother, Salma, experienced the activities of
benevolent societies devoted to appeasing the plight of cancer-affected children
and their families. She was deeply
inspired by these charities, and felt compelled to share the benefits with the
children in Bangladesh. Salma and her family transformed these thoughts into
reality by launching ASHIC’s first program – a counseling program called
“Somobyathi”. After ten years,
ASHIC has been able to serve more than 8,000 children across the country and
continues to grow the family.
