Parent’s Organization (ICCCPO), is an
international network through which its member parent organizations may share
information to build better links between parents and health care professionals.
It promotes greater awareness and understanding of the issues and effects
of childhood cancer on an international level with other health or child related
organizations such as the International Society of Pediatric Oncology (SIOP),
UNICEF and WHO. It also creates
opportunities to improve access to advances in the treatment and care of
childhood cancer patients, particularly in underdeveloped nations where the best
possible treatment and care are not available due to lack of medications,
facilities, information or other resources. ASHIC has been a member of ICCCPO since 2000.
Through its wide network of health professionals and other organizations
catering to childhood cancer, ASHIC continues to enhance its knowledge about the
disease and gather resources, allowing us to introduce innovative programs. National
Children’s Cancer Society The National Children's Cancer Society (N.C.C.S.) is an U.S. based non-profit organization whose mission is to provide direct financial support to children with cancer and their families, for expenses related to cancer treatment. We assist children from birth to age 18 and their families throughout the United States. In 1993, N.C.C.S. established the International Program to coordinate worldwide distribution of donated pharmaceuticals, medical supplies, supportive care products, and medical equipment and hospitals worldwide that treat children with cancer. It is through this International Program that ASHIC Foundation has partnered with NCCS since 1997. Over the last several years, with donations from NCCS, ASHIC has been responsible for distributing thousands of dollars worth of medication and other basic necessities to cancer-affected children in Bangladesh. The mission of Camp Quality is to establish and sustain nationwide community-based camping experiences and ongoing support programs for children with cancer and their families. The first Camp Quality was established "Down Under" in Sydney, Australia. Founder Vera Entwistle was living in the United States when she was first inspired with the idea of starting a camp after reading a magazine article. A loving couple dealing with the cancer of their child had begun a camp not only to address the needs of the children, but the needs of the family. "I was deeply moved by what I read. Many times these children, once diagnosed, are isolated from their friends and from most childhood activities, and are subjected to long periods of hospitalization. In far too many cases parents separate under the stress and one leaves the family. These single parents then struggle alone, coping with the children's illness, other children who also need attention, serious financial needs and their own loneliness." The particular family in the article had determined that this was not going to be their lot, so they put together a camp that provided a week of fun for the children, as well as a week of rest for the parents. Moved by their story and determination, Vera took the idea back to her home country of Australia and established the first Camp Quality in 1983. ASHIC came in contact with Vera in 1995. Two ASHIC representatives met with Vera and her husband, Brian, and attended one of their annual camps. After the experience, ASHIC introduced the Camp Quality-ASHIC Outing Program in 1996, which today is simply known as the ASHIC Outing Program. For the first few years of the project, the cost of the program was borne by Camp Quality Australia. Due to a change in their management, the ASHIC – Camp Quality partnership is no longer active. However, having started through the initiative and support of Vera and Brian Entwistle, the ASHIC Outing Program continues to provide happiness to hundreds of children each year. |
