Message from the Chairperson

Serving cancer-affected children -- what had started as a way to salvage my soul, has become a life-long vocation.

In 1994, my family started ASHIC Foundation after we lost my son, Ashiq, to cancer when he was only three years old. The developments of the foundation and all the children we have been able to work with over the years have been my most gratifying accomplishments to date. Our slow but steady progress has cultivated my strong conviction in the cause of ASHIC Foundation, and I remain completely dedicated to its future success.

We feel that with a growing gap between the haves and the have-nots, the importance of philanthropy is greater than ever before. Given the high poverty level and other hosts of problems Bangladeshi people face on a routine basis, it is difficult for us to initiate interest in the work that we do. Awareness about the disease is low; let alone understanding of the depth of services required to meet the children’s needs. We constantly struggle with constrained resources and have to actively choose between educating the masses and developing services for the children. One can appreciate the difficulty in sustaining one without the other. We continue to push limits and realize everyday that working in this field requires tremendous commitment. Constant innovations are required to keep the children happy and that means keeping vested groups interested in continuing support for ASHIC.

Within such challenging circumstances, the Foundation has managed to introduce several sustainable programs, which have benefited more than 10,000 children over the last 10 years. With an excellent combination of dedicated volunteer members, enthusiastic staff and growing interest in our work, ASHIC is indeed achieving extraordinary goals.

We believe that ASHIC is merely a medium, or a messenger if you will. We recognize that it is ultimately thanks to you, other donors, community groups, businesses and international agencies who share our ideals that ASHIC has been able to make a difference in the lives of so many suffering children in Bangladesh.
